Beschreibung

Denarius. AD 192, Rome. 2.66 g. 18.00 mm. 11h
Obv. L AEL AVREL COMM AVG P FEL, laureate head right.
Rev. P M TR P XVII IMP VIII COS VII P P, Fortuna Felix standing left, foot on prow, holding caduceus and cornucopiae, star in left field.
RIC III 235; BMC 324; RSC 578.
Lightly toned, struck from slightly worn dies. Good very fine.

This coin is struck shortly before his assassination and bears a very interessting portrait. During his reign, Commodus became increasingly insane. His facial features on this coin clearly show the madness that drove him shortly before his assassination.
